Programme

Jonathan Dove: In Damascus (Irish première)

Haydn: String Quartet in F minor, op 55 no 2, Razor

Shostakovich: String Quartet No 8 in C minor

The 2018 Great Music in Irish Houses Festival opens on June 12th with Jonathan Dove’s In Damascus, a harrowingly vivid setting of verses from Ali Safar’s A Black Cloud in a Leaden White Sky, published in Syria Speaks in 2014. The work’s subject is the war in Syria and the suffering of its people leaving as refugees for other lands.

Scored for tenor and string quartet and with English translations by Anne-Marie McManus, it was commissioned by the Sacconi Quartet and received its world première in May 2016. On the occasion of its first Irish performance, the Quartet will collaborate with celebrated Irish tenor, Robin Tritschler.  Described by Gramophone Magazine as a “masterpiece which should leave the listener utterly exhausted”, Dove’s outstanding new work is universal, deeply sympathetic and reflective.

The concert in the magnificent Royal Irish Academy will also feature quartets by Haydn and Shostakovich.

Presented in collaboration with the Royal Irish Academy
